Centoautori speak out against tax credit cuts

by

"The fiscal law decree approved by the government quashed the tax credit with a stroke of the pen, just as Minister of Culture Sandro Bondi says he wants to reinstate it. This provision of the latest budget law gives cinema a chance to find private resources in the market – a modern and free choice." With these words, the Centoautori movement has returned with an appeal to the Italian government for its cinema funding.

They did so today through spokesperson and director Daniele Luchetti, who during a meeting on auteur cinema organised by Venice Days at the French Academy in Rome read a communiqué signed by members of the movement, including directors, producers, screenwriters, cinematographers and actors.

"Along with the tax credit,” continues the communiqué, “resources for the digitalization of cinemas were also eliminated, as well as the little public funds allocated to our industry, which already receives less than other sectors in Italy and much less than in the other European countries. And this comes just as the European Commission has decided to extend the exemption of financial support of nations to their film industries until 2012".

The movement asks: "Why such a strong attack against our cinema right after the important wins at the Cannes Film Festival?"
