The Last Station shoot wraps

by

The Last Station’s 40-day shoot came to an end last Wednesday at the MCA Studios of Leipzig. The biopic (adapted by Jay Parini from his eponymous novel) depicts Leo Tolstoy's family life through the eyes of his young secretary Valentin Boulgakov (James McAvoy). The writer is played by Christopher Plummer and his wife Sofia by Helen Mirren, who gladly accepted after Meryl Streep's backed out.

Shooting of the €13m film took place in several regions in Germany before settling in Leipzig. Producers Jens Meurer (from German company Egoli Tossel Film) and Chris Curling (from the UK's Zephyr Films), are glad with the final results, which they said were enriching and quite pleasant for the whole team.

The atmosphere between the producers, director and stars was quite friendly and schedules have been respected. Meurer and Curling emphasised the significant contribution received from both regional (i.e. Saxe-Ahhalt) and national funds.

Dailies seen of the film so far are said to be amazing and industry insiders are also speaking of the film's Oscar potential.

The Last Station is expected to be released in Germany in early 2009 by Warner Bros.
