(“A Word from You”) – hits Spanish screens today. The filmmaker is director of the Spanish Film Academy and has previously won two Goya awards (Best Screenplay for Lucky Star in 1997 and Best New Director for her debut film, Sleeping Luck, in 2003).

Una palabra tuya is an ironic and poignant tragicomedy which avoids exaggerated melodrama and explores friendship and loneliness. The story centres on two young road-sweeper friends – Rosario and Milagros – who dream of a better future but don’t know how to achieve their desire.

After years of misfortune, delusion, fear and harsh reality, these two ordinary women start to believe they don’t deserve to be happy. In the company of Morsa, two opposing paths converge: joyful and full of life, one of them is heading towards a cruel void, while the other is moving towards a hopeful future via a redeemed life.

One of the main strengths of Una palabra tuya lies in its intertwining of film and literature, which is inevitable given that the director considers herself above all a “screenwriter”. Indeed, her second feature is adapted from a novel by popular author Lindo, who is particularly admired by the director for her "ability to highlight the moral conflicts in an everyday situation".

Produced by Tesela and Filmanova Invest, the feature stars Malena Alterio and Esperanza Pedreño, alongside Antonio de la Torre.

The film is being launched by Alta Films on just under 100 screens.
