The International Video Federation (IVF) has just published its annual statistical yearbook (The European Video Yearbook 2008), which makes it possible to analyse trends in the European video market as well as predict changes in the sector.

The IVF comments: "With a consumer turnover of approximately €11.5bn in 2007, the video production-distribution sector remains an essential contributor to the economy of the film and audiovisual field in the circulation of diverse works".

The popularity of DVDs is confirmed by the increase in the number sold to European consumers in 2007, exceeding 767m copies (+5% compared to the previous year). This rise is nonetheless accompanied by a 4% decrease in the average price, which is now around €12.60.

A total of 2.9m copies of high definition disks (HD-DVD et Blu-Ray) were sold in 2007, representing 0.4% of the overall volume and €86m in turnover.

Rentals saw a 12% decline, dropping from 652.9m to 575.1m transactions in 2007, i.e. €1.9bn in turnover.
