as their national entry for the Oscar nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

The jury described The Home of Dark Butterflies as “a coherent film that clearly expresses a wide mastery of cinematic narration. The touching story is told without haste but never loses its intensity.”

The portrayal of the survival of a teenager sent to a boys reform school home on a remote island is based on a novel by Leena Lander, which had been optioned by a Hollywood studio but ended up in the hands of Finnish mogul Markus Selin (Solar Films). The film sold 130,000 admissions in Finland and is represented internationally by TrustNordisk. It is also Finland’s selection for the Nordic Council Film Prize.
