Petr Zelenka's The Karamazovs in the running

The Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) announced that it has chosen Petr Zelenka's The Karamazovs [+see also:

to represent the Czech Republic in the contest for Best Foreign Language Film at the 81st annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

Produced by Cestmir Kopecky, the film is a Czech–Polish co-production between Prvni verejnopravni, Ceska televize and Warsaw Pact Filmproduction.

In making the announcement, the CFTA called attention to two other Czech films — Bohdan Slama's drama A Country Teacher [+see also:

and Vaclav Marhoul's WWII drama Tobruk — which CTFA director Petr Vachler said also would have made strong contenders for the Oscar.

"This year is strong and there are many more [Czech] films which could compete for an Oscar, unlike in other years," Vachler said.
