obliterating the all time UK three-day opening weekend collections record.

The film collected £15.4m from 1150 screens, including £4.94m on Friday alone, crossing a mark set by the other British icon, in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which had collected £14.93m in November 2005. Despite a less than enthusiastic response from mainstream UK critics, Quantum of Solace proved once again that for UK audiences at least, James Bond is critic proof. The film begins minutes after Casino Royale ends, with Bond thirsting for revenge after the death of his love Vesper Lynd. Daniel Craig returns as Bond under the direction of Swiss/German director Marc Forster.

In mainland Europe, the film’s debut was equally impressive with France recording collections of €8.2m from 842 screens, beating Casino Royale’s €7.05m. Sweden was equally impressive with weekend collections of 18.1m krona from 149 screens, easily besting Casino Royale’s 13.8m.

Quantum of Solace opens in several European territories next weekend including Russia, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria.
