UGC set to release adaptation of Swedish Millenium

Swedish novelist Stieg Larsson’s trilogy, Millenium, sold over 2m copies in bookshops in France (a record for its publisher Actes Sud) and 7.6m across the world. This success aroused the interest of UGC who have bought from Zodiak International the French rights for theatrical, video and television distribution of the film and TV series adapted from the best-seller.

Adapted from the first volume of the trilogy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is helmed by Danish director Niels Arden Oplev (We Shall Overcome [+see also:

). The feature will be released in French theatres in the first half of 2009 by UGC, who have promised: "a print-run and release that reflects the immense popularity of this trilogy, which audiences can’t wait to see on the big screen."

Written by Rasmus Heisterberg and Nikolaj Arcel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo stars Swedish actors Michael Nykvist and Noomi Rapace as the now-famous investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist and eccentric computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Produced by Swedish company Yellow Bird and sold internationally by Zodiak International, the adaptations of Larsson’s trilogy also include a TV series (6 x 90”) currently in post-production. Co-produced by Nordisk Film and backed by television channels SVT (Sweden), ZDF (Germany) and DR (Denmark), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be released on January 30, 2009 in Sweden, March 6 in Denmark, March 13 in Norway and March 27 in Finland.
