Swiss Cinémathèque turns 60

Paris’ Swiss Cultural Centre is hosting a special programme from December 10-14 to celebrate the anniversary of the Swiss Archives (which are among the largest in the world), but there are no celebrations planned at the institution’s Lausanne headquarters.

The departure in July of director Hervé Dumont and the anticipated arrival in November 2009 of his successor, Frédéric Maire (who will remain artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival for another year), haven’t encouraged interim director Marc Wehrlin to raise a toast to the old institution.

However, by way of a celebratory gift, the Swiss Confederation is preparing to release €32m in order to kick-start the major extension of the Swiss Cinémathèque’s archival storage premises.
