Amelio new artistic director of Turin

Director Gianni Amelio has been named the new artistic director of the Turin Film Festival, replacing Nanni Moretti (see news). The nomination was made official yesterday by the National Film Museum with the the Associazione Cinema Giovani, which oversee the festival.

Born in 1945, Amelio made his feature debut in 1983 with Blow to the Heart. In 1990, Open Doors won an Oscar nomination and two years later Stolen Children won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and six David di Donatello awards.

In 1998, Amelio won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival with Così ridevano. He is the only Italian to have won three European Film Awards, for Open Doors, Stolen Children and Lamerica. His latest film was 2006 title The Missing Star [+see also:
