The Works makes “lofty” sales

From her stand at the Martin Gropius Bau of the European Film Market, Joy Wong, head of The Works International, is satisfied with deals closed on Erik van Looy’s Loft [+see also:

and buyers’ responses on Stephen Poliakoff’s 1939, in post-production.

Loft, which came to the market with a positive buzz from its successful domestic release in Belgium (over one million admissions), was sold to Germany (Atlas) and is in negotiations with several other territories. 1939 – a thriller set on the eve of WWII starring Romola Garai, Bill Nighy and Julie Christie – attracted a lot of interest and several pre-sales are expected by the end of the market.

Another hot title has been James Marsh’s documentary Man on Wire [+see also:

, which sold to Poland (Best Film), Scandinavia (Smile), Benelux (Lumière) and Portugal (Castello Lopes) among others.

Other films Wong has begun presenting are Rachel Ward’s feature debut Beautiful Kate, based on the eponymous novel by Newton Thornburg, and My Year Without Sex, by another female writer/director, Sarah Watt.
