Media Salles: Audiences grow 0.2% in 2008, France top European market

Audience figures in Western European increased slightly in 2008, to reach 867 million admissions – a .2% increase over 2007. The cinema-going data was presented by MEDIA Salles at the Berlinale.
France was the top market, with 188.8 millions spectators and an increase of +6.2%. It was followed by Germany (3.2%) and the UK (+1.1%). Certain smaller markets also grew, such as Finland (7.7%) and Norway, whose audience figures rose by 9.7% thanks to several domestic hits, in particular Max Manus [+see also:

film profile], seen by almost one million cinema-goers.
Countries that registered a decrease in admissions were Spain (-8.5%), Belgium (-3.1%), Portugal (-2.1%) and Italy, which after a particularly strong 2007 according to initial estimates could end 2008 with 109 million viewers and a 4.2% decline in admissions.
