Faenza’s Klara aims for international audiences

Five of the Czech writer’s novels have been made into domestic film hits, including Holiday Makers, which was number one at the 2006 box office (and screened to success at the Tribeca Film Festival). This October, the latest, Nestyda, an adaptation of A Novel for Women, will come out.

However, Faenza has moved far away from the book’s dramatic atmosphere, giving the film a lighter and more over-the-top tone, perhaps in the hopes of also reaching younger audiences. Shot in a modern, sensual and lively Prague, the film tells the story of a young Italian musician (Claudio Santamaria) who is extremely jealous of his girlfriend Klara (Chiatti) and hires a detective to try and prove her betrayal.

The central theme in the film is thus an emotion that, according to tests carried out during the film’s sneak preview, also reaches 16- to 21-year-olds, 80% of whom said they read the emails and texts messages of their girlfriends and boyfriends and have even had them shadowed.

Santamaria and Chiatti should secure the film Italian audiences while Scottish actor Iain Glen and British actress Kierston Wareing (the extraordinary star of Ken Loach It’s a Free World... [+see also:
