Inaugurated in Brussels with a grand event and the screening of Pupi Avati’s film Il cuore altrove, Cinedays is a two-week cinema festival that involves hundreds of screenings of European movie classics at theatres and on television screens across the continent.
The official opening took place in Brussels on 9 October 2003, and the Italian Presidency organised the closing ceremony on 24 October in Rome.
The video documents the opening ceremony and the speech of Viviane Reding introducing and presenting the initiative. She believes that European cinema had slowly built itself up in recent years but remained national in character and that "European films are often of very high quality, but they should be better known by the European public". Cinedays , in fact, bringing together cinemas, schools, local authorities, broadcasters and festivals, encourages the launch of initiatives relating to film education and a critical use of images, with the aim of arousing young people’s taste for quality cinema.
