- Producer on the Move 2008 – Greece

Cineuropa: What is your background and how did you become a producer?
Maria Drandaki: I studied communication, cultural management and mass media with a specialization in cinema. My studies were mostly theoretical but there were also some practical seminars. As part of those we did a series of student movies with the help of known Greek directors. It was an unusual and very strong experience and it was then that I realized that I was more interested in participating in the process of making a film than analyzing it.

What is your company’s production philosophy?
I act as an independent producer but I also collaborate with various production companies. The philosophy of the one I have been working with since 2004 (Bad Movies) is to specialise in high quality films and television programmes aimed at a wide range of audiences both in Greece and abroad. As well as to host different independent producers from various backgrounds and different orientations who can within the company’s abovementioned editorial line independently develop their projects.

How do you choose projects? What qualities must a project have to catch your attention?
The main quality a project must have to attract my interest is originality; either in the idea or in its treatment (in visual or narrative terms). Also, I am usually attracted to projects from young and not-so-experienced people because they are more willing to explore the medium’s potential. I also favour projects with European or even international potential.

Do you have international perspectives involving co-producing with other European countries? With which countries do you co-produce the most?
Greece is a small country in terms of audiovisual production. This as well as the limits due to the Greek language make co-producing with other countries more difficult to achieve. The choice of strong and original ideas is the only way to overcome this restraint. The company I currently work with has already initiated co-productions with countries such as Germany and Italy. Also, my most recent film (Alexis Alexiou’s Tale 52) has gained attention at different important film festivals (such as Rotterdam, Sitges and so forth) and other people on the film market abroad (for example, sales agents).

My colleagues and I intend to consolidate and reinforce the contacts we have acquired in Europe and to accomplish long-standing collaborations with them without of course excluding collaborations with smaller audiovisual markets such as our own. For a country such as Greece this perspective is the only way to be able to continue working and creating in this sector.

How do you feel about being selected as a Producer on the Move 2008?
I feel very happy and honoured to have been selected as a Producer on the Move 2008. I’m only starting as a producer and I think this is a great opportunity to meet other European producers, as well as other people from the audiovisual sector and gain from their experiences as well.
