by Copenhagen-based debutant Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason has conquered the 34th Robert Awards (Robertprisen) by taking home nine statuettes, including those for Danish Film of the Year and Best Director. In the TV series categories, DR’s Ride Upon the Storm scooped all of the major awards. The annual ceremony organised by the Danish Film Academy, which celebrates Danish film and television, was hosted by Paprika Steen and took place at Copenhagen’s Tivoli Hotel & Congress Centre on Sunday 4 February.

Winter Brothers, which depicts the relationship between two brothers in a “lack of love story” about embracing quirkiness, is already well-travelled and has been awarded at several major film festivals – including Locarno, CPH:PIX, Thessaloniki and New Horizons – and it also received the Roberts for Best Actor (Elliott Crosset Hove) and Best Supporting Actress (Victoria Carmen Sonne). Five more of its awards were for technical categories, including Best Cinematography for Maria von Hausswolff and Best Sound Design for Lars Halvorsen. The film took only 8,000 admissions in Denmark, and Pálmason mentioned: “It takes time to build something up; it does not happen in a day, so we should slowly build an audience that is interested in experiencing something new and something different.”

Ride Upon the Storm, a character-driven drama that centres on a family of priests that traces its roots back more than 250 years, came out on top in the TV categories. The series, broadcasted by Danish pubcaster DR and directed by Kaspar Munk, received the Best TV Series Robert, while leading actor Lars Mikkelsen and actress Ann Eleonora Jørgensen received their respective Roberts. Another family drama, The Legacy, which has aired its third and final season, and was also commissioned by DR, received the Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) and Best Supporting Actress (Lene Maria Christensen).
