The 69th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival (7-17 February 2019), the last one under the auspices of its director of 18 years Dieter Kosslick, has chosen French actress and Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche as chair of the jury of the International Competition.

Binoche, who has starred in over 70 films and garnered a string of awards, is not only closely connected to Cannes (where she was crowned Best Actress for Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy [+lee también:

in 2010, the same year she also adorned the poster of the prestigious event) and Venice (where she won two Best Actress Awards, including the Volpi Cup in 1993, for her role in Krzysztof Kieślowski's Three Colours: Blue); she has also been a regular at the Berlinale since her first collaboration with Leos Carax, The Night Is Young, screened in competition in 1987. Their second film together, The Lovers on the Bridge, was presented in the Forum section in 1992. In 1993, she received a Berlinale Camera followed, in 1997, by a Silver Bear for her performance in Anthony Minghella's The English Patient (1996), which also earned her a BAFTA and an Academy Award. As the Berlin press release underlines, Binoche was the first European actress to receive honours at the festivals in Berlin, Venice and Cannes.

“I’m very pleased that Juliette is the president of the 2019 International Jury. The festival shares a strong connection with her, and I’m very happy that she’ll be returning to the gathering in this distinguished position,” commented Kosslick, to which the French thespian, graceful as ever, replied: “Thank you for this tremendous honour and invitation for your last Berlinale, dear Dieter. It means the world to me! I’m looking forward to this special rendezvous with the entire jury, and will embrace my task with joy and care.”
