Having already firmly established itself as one of the industry’s most dynamic international vendors after just two years of activity, the French firm Charades (led by Yohann Comte, Carole Baraton, Pierre Mazars and Constantin Briest) will provide another overview of its growth strategy at the 18th Tribeca Film Festival (running 24 April to 5 May). In fact, two titles featuring in the festival line-up will enjoy world premiere screenings during the New York event, and both of these full-length films have involved Charades in their production and co-production.

, the first feature film by Carlo Mirabella-Davis, which will be battling it out in the US Narrative competition of the Tribeca Festival, was produced by the US-based Mollye Asher on behalf of Standalone Productions (who was also the producer for Chloé Zhao’s first three feature films) and her compatriot Mynette Louie on behalf of Syncopated Films, alongside Carole Baraton on behalf of Charades and Fréderic Fiore on behalf of another French organisation, Logical Pictures. Written by the director, the story centres around Hunter (played by Haley Bennett), a woman who has recently fallen pregnant and who leads an idyllic life as a housewife, living with a perfect husband (Austin Stowell). But she soon develops an eating disorder which drives her to ingest inedible substances; an obsession which poses a very real threat to the perfect life she leads. Her husband and mother-in-law (Elizabeth Marvel) notice her new eating habits and begin to watch Hunter more closely, hoping to make her face up to the dark secret hiding behind this bizarre compulsion.

), a French production which will premiere worldwide as part of the Movies Plus programme. Produced by Gaël Nouaille, Laurent Flahault and Laurent Baudens for Borsalino Productions and Valdes (a brand new entity and sister-company of the former, dedicated to documentaries), the film was co-produced by Charades, Wag Prod and Wagram Films. It is set against the lush, green mountains of Kingston and stars the living legends of Reggae (notably Ken Boothe, Kiddus I, Winston McAnuff, Cedric Myton and Judy Mowatt) who have reunited to make a record. Over thirty years have passed since the group’s heyday and they are now readying themselves to tour the world all over again. The documentary recounts the very human adventure embarked upon by these singers, who not only embody a legendary and universal musical genre, but who are also the very soul of the Jamaican island nation. The film is set for release in French cinema on 10 July, courtesy of Le Pacte.
