Well known for being one of the main streaming platforms for cult and rare films, Spamflix is now launching its official app, which is available for TV sets and mobiles. With almost 100 films available in its catalogue, Spamflix App will give users of iOS and Android phones, as well as people who use AirPlay and Chromecast, a chance to enjoy the content. Also, for those users who are registering for the first time (for free, as there is no subscription, per se) and download the app, Spamflix is offering a free film coupon that can be used for any of the movies (offer valid until 22 May).

Spamflix was started two years ago by Markus Duffner, a project manager at the Locarno Film Festival, and Julia Duarte, former producer of the São Paulo International Film Festival (see the news), and has so far built up a catalogue of lesser-seen but nevertheless important films that span several different genres. The service is available without any subscription, but users may either rent a film for 72 hours or choose a Film Pack for multiple movies at discounted rates.

Duffner stated: “With the app, we aim to reach a larger audience through a variety of devices, all offering the same catalogue and paying the same attention to showcasing cult and genre cinema, which Spamflix excels in. However, when we planned this a month ago, we couldn’t have accounted for the current worldwide situation, and we hope that releasing it now helps those stuck indoors to spend their days more pleasantly.”

Spamflix’s library is constantly updated and enriched, and some of the categories available to peruse include Black Comedy, Crime, Nonsense, WTF Did I Just Watch?, and the timely #staythefuckhome. It should be mentioned that apart from features, Spamflix also focuses on short-film programmes, and in partnership with acclaimed festivals, it features the 2019 Fantasia Shorts Programme, a collection of Quebecois shorts from the celebrated genre festival in Montreal, and the Trieste Science + Fiction Shorts Programme, a collection of Italian sci-fi shorts. These selections will also be expanded with shorts from the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, Lund Fantastik Film Fest and Phenomena Film Fest, which will all join in the next few months, while later on, the Morbido Film Festival, Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival and Court Métrange will partner with the platform.

Spamflix is co-financed by the Lisboa 2020 programme of the ERDF European Fund.
