The Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière is limbering up to host the 3^rd edition of the Cannes International Series Festival - Canneseries from 9 to 14 October, following the event’s postponement in the spring as a result of the spike in Coronavirus cases. But given the ongoing tension surrounding the pandemic, this year’s edition of the festival will adopt a dual form, offering up physical screenings (governed by strict health and safety recommendations) as well as a newly created platform christened Canneseries Live (active as of yesterday), which will allow free access to all content broadcast during the festival (with a limit of 2,308 seats per showing).

Due to be opened by Jonathan Cohen and Jérémie Galan’s French series La Flamme, with the closing slot allotted to two episodes of Call My Agent!’s fourth season, this year’s event will chiefly offer up a competition comprising ten Long Series, which will include eight world premieres and two international premieres. The jury and audience will need to choose between two French-Belgian productions in the form of Moloch by Arnaud Malherbe and Cheyenne and Lola by Eshref Reybrouk (created by Virginie Brac), the Belgian-Dutch co-production Red Light by Wouter Bouvijn and Anke Blondé (a Halina Rejn and Carice van Houten creation), two Swedish titles in the form of Partisan by Amir Chamdin (who co-created the work alongside Fares Fares - the lead actor – based upon an original idea by Mauricio Molinari) and Top Dog by Alexis Almström (a Veronica Sacco creation), the Norwegian series (co-produced by Germany) Atlantic Crossing by Alexander Eik, Finland’s Man in Room 301 by Miko Kuparinen, and the British supernatural comedy drama Truth Seekers by Jim Field-Smith. Also in the running is the Russian series 257 Reasons to Live and Israel’s Losing Alice.

Catching our eye Out of Competition, among other offerings, is the world premiere of OVNI(s) by France’s Antony Cordier and of the French-Canadian-German co-production Shadowplay by the Swedish duo Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein.

An international competition for short series is likewise on the agenda, while the Icon Award will go to American actress Judith Light and the Rising Star Award to English actress Daisy Edgar-Jones. A huge number of meetings and masterclasses are also set to take place at the Espace Miramar theatre, or online, notably featuring actors along the lines of Sigourney Weaver, Kyle Mac Lachlan, Jared Harris, Erin Moriarty and Camille Cottin, directors Éric Rochant and Baran Bo Odar, and producers Jantje Friese and Gale Ann Hurd. And that’s without forgetting the focus on fantasy within French productions, and on the new wave of women directing series, the various screenings of works awarded the Série Series, La Rochelle Festival and Series Mania labels, and a taster of upcoming series (including the French offerings La Révolution and L’Opéra, and Spain’s Patria [+lee también:

ficha de la serie], recently unveiled in San Sebastián – read our review). Last but not least, the Canneseries Writers Club will unfold on 13 and 14 October at the Majestic, bringing together thirty or so scriptwriters who will get the opportunity to exchange ideas with producers and showrunners.
