The upcoming film, penned by the director himself, has been described as “a bold and unnerving character-driven horror film, in the vein of Hereditary, Rosemary’s Baby and The Babadook”. In detail, we will follow Laura (Andi Matichak), a mother who, after escaping from a cult as a child, must face her past when its sinister members break into her home and attempt to steal her eight-year-old son, David (Luke David Blumm). Now the two are on the run, pursued by Paul (Emile Hirsch), a detective determined to save them both. Since his aborted kidnapping, something has changed in David, and the boy has succumbed to a mysterious illness. Following her maternal instincts to save him, his mother commits unspeakable acts to keep him alive but is losing the battle. Soon, she has to decide how far she is willing to go to save her son. Other members of the main cast are Cranston Johnson, Blaine Maye, J Robert Spencer, Rocco Sisto and Kristine Nielsen. The feature was lensed by Piers McGrail (Ordinary Love [+lee también:

, Never Grow Old) as the production designer. Aza Hand (Never Grow Old) was in charge of its score.

Kavanagh started writing the film shortly after the birth of his first son. The birth was very difficult and was followed by months of extreme stress. “From that fear and dread came Son, which I wrote during those initial sleepless nights, with all that anxiety and those emotion-filled nightmares. This accounts for the nightmarish quality and logic of the film, always a trait of the most frightening and beloved horror movies.”

Son was produced by AnneMarie Naughton for Ireland’s Park Films, Louis Tisné for the UK’s Elastic and René Bastian for US outfit Belladonna Productions, in association with Golden Ratio (Singapore), Blisspoint Entertainment (Singapore), Quickfire Films (UK) and Eyevox Entertainment (USA). Altitude Films is in charge of its international sales. The project was also backed by Screen Ireland, the country’s film agency.

Son will be released in the USA on 5 March via RLJE Films, with SVoD platform Shudder releasing it in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand later in the spring. The title will also take part in the upcoming online edition of the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival (3-14 March).
