The pandemic, express edition of the Berlinale has already started announcing its award winners. After having kicked off its industry and press event on Monday, it’s now turn for the juries of the Generation and Berlinale Shorts sections to announce their verdicts.

Weighing up a selection of a total of 15 feature films, and with one jury for both competitions, owing to the pandemic, the members of the International Jury for Generation – German actress Jella Haase, Dutch director Mees Peijnenburg and German director Melanie Waelde – announced The Fam [+lee también:

ficha de la película] by Swiss director Fred Baillif as the winner of the Grand Prix for the Best Film in the Generation 14Plus strand. The jury statement reads, “Like a rushing, energetic, pulsing heartbeat, this film pushes its characters and viewers with brutal honesty through different stories and incidents. Carried by captivating and strong acting performances, it never loses its balance between power and vulnerability. The film pulls you in, never lets go and hits straight to the heart.” The movie was produced by Freshprod and RTS.

Alongside this award, the jury announced a Special Mention for Dash Shaw’s Cryptozoo (USA).

As for the Generation KPlus section, the winner of the Grand Prix for Best Film was Summer Blur by Chinese director Han Shuai, while a Special Mention went to A School in Cerro Hueso by Argentina’s Betania Cappato.

Meanwhile, the International Short Film Jury, including Egyptian artist Basim Magdy, Austrian cinematographer Christine A Maier and German actor Sebastian Urzendowsky, bestowed the Golden Bear for Best Short Film upon Olga Lucovnicova’s documentary My Uncle Tudor (Belgium/Portugal/Hungary). According to the jury, the director “leads us through the complexity of unravelling a childhood trauma. Her personal courage, combined with cinematic mastery, creates a film that is both powerful and emotionally layered.” The Silver Bear Jury Prize went to Chinese director Zhang Dalei’s fiction film Day Is Done.

The jury also selected the animated film Easter Eggs (Belgium/France/Netherlands), directed by Nicolas Keppens, as Berlin’s candidate for the upcoming European Film Awards.
