One of the 15 projects selected by the Cinéfondation’s L’Atelier this year (8-13 July), Ella Manzheeva’s White Road!, is set to begin filming later this autumn, Cineuropa has learned. Manzheeva, the second Russian filmmaker to receive support from the programme, made her debut with The Gulls, which premiered in the Berlinale’s Forum section in 2015.

White Road! is described as “a modern myth” and follows Aldar, a successful young rapper returning to his native Kalmykia, a republic in Southern Russia, to search for his mother in the endless steppe. Its people are related to nearby Mongolians and their spirits guided by Tibetan Buddhism. Aldar and his mother will go down a road that they did not have time to follow while she was still alive. Interestingly, Aldar will be played by a real rapper, Timur Bubeev, best known as Everthe8.

Speaking about the project, the director explained that her new effort “will be familiar to everyone who has experienced in their life not only the loss of their loved ones, but the inner loss of themselves as well. […] It’s a road movie inside my own subconscious, the memory of my ancestors, defenders of the faith against social problems, spiritual poverty and hunger,” she added.

Meanwhile, producer Elena Glikman disclosed: “During the Cinéfondation’s L’Atelier, we held over 50 meetings with distributors and sales agents; some had already communicated with us at international markets, and others met us in Cannes for the first time. In addition to L’Atelier, we also spoke about the project in the Russian pavilion thanks to the participation of White Road! in panel discussions and round-table talks held by Roskino. […] The interest in the project is very high. The film is being widely discussed even before the shoot has started. And we feel that at such an early stage, we already have a great chance to secure some international sales.”

Shooting this autumn in Kalmykia, Mongolia and Moscow, White Road! is being produced by Elena Glikman for Telesto Film (Russia) and Victoria Lupik for Anniko Films (Russia), with support from Roskino, the Republic of Kalmykia and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The project’s international co-producers are Ariunaa Tserenpil for Mongolia’s Guru Media, Valentin LeBlanc for France’s Black Boat Pictures, and Valentin LeBlanc and Dolphin Dewes for Belgium’s White Boat Pictures.
