Hot Docs Forum, Canadian festival Hot Docs’ acclaimed international co-financing market and flagship industry event, announced its prizes last week, including CAD 40,000 (circa €29,000) in first look Pitch Prizes and the CAD 10,000 (about €7,300) CMF-Hot Docs Forum Canadian Pitch Prize.

“The resilience and creativity of our documentary creators and dedicated support from the decision-maker community are most powerfully displayed in this 2022 edition of the Hot Docs Forum,” said Elizabeth Radshaw, director of Hot Docs Industry Programmes. “It is a true honour to see the family grow.” Financed by the participants in the Hot Docs first look programme, a curated access programme for philanthropic supporters of and investors in documentary film, the first look Pitch Prizes were decided on by said participants after viewing all 20 pitches.

The First Prize of CAD 25,000 (€18,180) went to The Queendom by Mexican-Guatemalan director Otilia Portillo, best known for the 2012 SXSW title Three Voices, about three Mexican indigenous scientist women who employ their expertise on mushrooms in ingenious ways, with the goal of defending their communities against extractive industries, poverty, climate change, and sometimes state and local violence. This film combines documentary and science fiction to follow their struggle from both human and fungal perspectives. Paula Arroio is producing and Elena Fortes executive-producing for Mexico's Oscura Producciones, and the project is currently in development.

A Woman's Path by Marjan Khosravi

The Second Prize, worth CAD 15,000 (€10,900), was handed to A Woman's Path, the first feature-length documentary by Iranian director Marjan Khosravi, whose mid-length film The Snow Calls took part in IDFA's 2020 Student Competition and went on to win at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and Escales Documentaires. It follows Golbahar, a member of the Bakhtiari, a nomadic tribe from southwestern Iran, who was forced to leave it when she got married and moved to the big city. Now she wants to reconnect with the tribe, whose migrating activities are diminished owing to climate change, and personal and political issues. The film, currently in production, is being co-produced by Milad Khosravi and Mahdieh Mehvar for Iran's Seven Spring Pictures, and Stephanie von Lukowicz for Spain's Lukimedia.

Finally, the CMF-Hot Docs Forum Canadian Pitch Prize, worth CAD 10,000, went to Untitled Labor Union Documentary by Stephen Maing (Crime + Punishment) and Brett Story (The Prison in Twelve Landscapes). Centring on a small group of Amazon workers-cum-activists, the documentary follows the historic efforts of the Amazon Labor Union’s independent union drive at the “JFK8” fulfilment centre in Staten Island, New York. Currently in production, the project is being co-produced by Mars Verrone and Samantha Curley (Framing Agnes) for New York-based outfit Level Ground Productions and Canada's Oh Ratface Films.
