My Father's Dragon by Nora Twomey

Este artículo está disponible en inglés.

With just a few days to go until the 41st Annecy Animated Film Festival (running 13 – 18 June – read our article on the feature film official selection) and its Mifa market (running 14 – 17 June – read our news on pitches) which will see professionals from all over the world and from the “big family of animation” gathering together, we offer up a brief overview of the tantalising Work in Progress section. Presentations of these works, delivered by their accompanying teams, are set to punctuate the coming weeks. A total 15 titles are set to jostle on the agenda, including eight feature films, three VR works, two series and two short films.

Especially eye-catching among these is Nora Twomey’s My Father's Dragon [+lee también:

, which is steered by the award-winning Irish studio Cartoon Saloon. Based upon Ruth Stiles Gannett’s book of the same name, the film revolves around Elmer who is struggling to cope after a move to the city with his mother and who runs away in search of Wild Island and a young dragon who waits only to be rescued. Elmer's adventures lead him towards ferocious beasts, a mysterious island and the friendship of a lifetime.

The Work in Progress section also includes The Most Precious of Cargos by Michel Hazanavicius (the first foray into animation for the director who very recently presented Final Cut [+lee también:

in Cannes). This adaptation of Jean-Claude Grumberg’s tale of the same name centres on a poor couple of lumberjacks who lived in the thick of a Polish forest. The poor woman complains that she had no children. Day and night, trains pass through the woods. One day, as the poor woman is watching a train which she believes to be a freight train, a package is thrown off-board, falling into the snow…

Likewise gracing the showcase is They Shot the Piano Player, which heralds the long-awaited return of the Spanish duo Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, on the occasion of an animated film, 12 years after Chico & Rita [+lee también:

. The story of their latest work is as follows: a New York music journalist sets out to find the truth behind the tragic disappearance of young Brazilian piano virtuoso Tenorio Jr. Celebrating the world-renowned Latin music movement Bossa Nova, the film captures a fleeting period of creative freedom at a turning point in Latin American history in the 1960s and 1970s, just before the continent was engulfed by totalitarian regimes.

Also worth a mention is Nina and the Tales of the Hedgehog by French helmers Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli (a duo who turned heads with Une vie de chat [+lee también:

), in which the world of 10-year-old Nina has been in turmoil since her father lost his job. The factory he worked in closed, despite weeks of strikes, because the manager had tampered with the accounts, bringing about bankruptcy. But rumour has it that a nest-egg remains hidden somewhere in the factory.

Annecy’s Work in Progress section will likewise offer up Chicken for Linda! by French directors Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach (very well-received via La jeune fille sans mains [+lee también:
