(awarded the Best Photography prize in competition at San Sebastian in 2021). Loosely adapted from Jérôme Ferrari’s novel of the same name, the story (which was co-written by the filmmaker and Jeanne Aptekman) revolves around several moments in the life of Antonia - a photographer who’s the victim of a road traffic accident in Corsica - and her closest friends. These moments intersect with the most violent events in the island’s political history, spanning the 1980s and the early 21st century. Production is entrusted to Les Films Velvet, distribution to Pyramide, while filming will unfold in Corsica and Bosnia next spring.

) and Jovan Gini in lead roles. Penned by the director alongside French talent Alice Winocour, the story takes us to Belgrade in 1996. In the heat of events, while the student protests against Milosevic’s regime rage on, 14-year-old Stefan must lead the hardest revolution of them all, all on his own: accepting the unacceptable, realising that his mother is complicit in the regime’s politics and finding the strength to confront her… Lost Country is produced by KinoElektron (France), Trilema (Serbia), Kinorama (Croatia) and Red Lion (Luxembourg), and will continue shooting in Belgrade until end October.

Arte France Cinéma are also backing two first feature films: Rabia by Mareike Engelhardt (a production involving French firm Films Grand Huit and Germany’s Starhaus Filmproduktion, on which filming is due to unfold in November and December) and Paradise by Jérémy Comte (co-written by Will Navia, produced by France’s Constellation Productions and Cinenovo alongside Canada’s Elevation Pictures, and due to be shot in autumn next year).

Equally noteworthy is the network’s selection of three films within the framework of Arte’s French-German Grand Accord: La disparition by Kirill Serebrennikov, Apathie by Alexandros Avranas and Das Geträumte Abenteuer by Valeska Grisebach.

For the record, Arte France Cinéma are also supporting upcoming films by Alice Rohrwacher, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Bertrand Bonello, Miguel Gomes, Philippe Garrel, Abderrahmane Sissako, Lisandro Alonso, Walter Salles, Jonas Trueba, Patricia Mazuy, André Téchiné, Emmanuel Finkiel, Sophie Letourneur, Justyna Tafel, Johanna Pyykkö, Payal Kapadia, Diego Céspedes, Karim Moussaoui, Stephan Castang, Sofia Alaoui, Momoko Seto and Ramata-Toulaye Sy, as well as by the directorial duo Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel.
