After a troubled edition at the beginning of the year, the Golden Globe Awards seem to be back on track. Last year's boycott from Hollywood owing to the various controversies surrounding the organising body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which resulted in a ceremony with no guests and no telecast partner, seems to have been forgotten after the association explained that it “has completely overhauled its bylaws, implementing sweeping changes from top to bottom that address ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, membership and more”. With a 2023 ceremony now set for 10 January, and NBC as the telecast partner, the awards have announced the nominees for their 80th-anniversary edition.

In a list filled with US blockbusters (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Elvis, Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick) in what seems to be the association's attempt to lure audiences to go back to the theatre experience, it is nonetheless a majority European production leading the pack. has received no fewer than eight nominations - namely, in the Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score categories, as well as four in the acting categories (including one for Colin Farrell, who already won the Volpi Cup last September for this role).

The Irish-set film is not the only English-language, European-produced work to have made it onto the list of films vying for the statuettes, however. Surprisingly, Ruben Östlund's awards juggernaut Triangle of Sadness [+lee también:

, the Palme d'Or winner at this year's Cannes Film Festival and the main victor at this weekend's European Film Awards (see the news), has earned itself a nomination in Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, alongside another one for Filipina actress Dolly De Leon for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, for her turn as the middle-aged maid Abigail.

Other European works are featured in the acting categories, such as Sam Mendes' Empire of Light [+lee también:

, through the nominations for Olivia Colman, Hugh Jackman and Bill Nighy, respectively. In the series categories, only The Crown has managed to get some nods, for Best Television Series, Drama, and for the work of Imelda Staunton, Elizabeth Debicki and Jonathan Pryce.

As for Best Motion Picture, Non-English Language, this year there are only two European films: Germany's All Quiet on the Western Front [+lee también:

, directed by Lukas Dhont. Both films are their own countries' submissions for the Oscars race, and this nomination probably means they are one step closer to being in the mix to win the Academy's statuette.
