Viaplay has announced a new psychological thriller series, titled End of Summer and based on Swedish crime writer Anders de la Motte’s best-selling novel of the same title.

The six-part show is being directed by Jens Jonsson (the series Blinded and The Hunters) and Henrik Georgsson (the series The Bridge and Wallander), based on a script penned by head writers Björn Carlström (The Hunters) and Stefan Thunberg (The Hunters, the series The Case). The episode writers are Axel Stjärne, Jimmy Nivrén Olsson and Pontus Edvinsson. The project was filmed in Skåne, in the southern part of Sweden, last summer.

The series begins with the disappearance of a five-year-old boy on a late-summer evening in 1984 in rural southern Sweden. The police investigation fails to uncover the truth, leaving only rumours, suspicion and a grieving family. Twenty years later, the boy’s older sister, Vera, is leading a group therapy session in Stockholm, when a young man describes a strangely familiar childhood memory of a disappearance. A shaken Vera travels home to her fractured family to uncover, once and for all, what really happened during that summer that never ended.

Vera is played by Julia Ragnarsson (Blinded, Two Sisters, Midsommar), while the supporting role of Isak has been entrusted to Erik Enge (Tigers [+lee también:

“We are very happy about our collaboration with Harmonica Films and about the opportunity to produce this exciting thriller series together for Viaplay. With a strong story, translated into 30 different languages, by one of our most popular crime writers, and with all of the talent in the project, we are confident that this will be a success both in the Nordics and internationally,” said Tim King, EVP production at SF Studios.

“Viaplay continues to invest in strong Nordic stories that touch the audience. End of Summer is an incredibly powerful novel because of its complex characters and beautiful settings. The series is created by an incredible team, and I dare to promise Viaplay’s viewers something out of the ordinary,” added Filippa Wallestam, EVP and chief content officer at Viaplay Group.

End of Summer is being produced by Per Janérus (The Hunters, The War Game) and Björn Carlström for Harmonica Films, with Jens Jonsson, Anders de la Motte, Tim King, of SF Studios, and Helena Larand, of Viaplay Group, serving as executive producers. SF Studios and Film i Skåne are co-producing, with the worldwide sales being handled by Viaplay Content Distribution. The show will premiere exclusively on Viaplay later this autumn.
