. Selected to participate in the Official Competition of the Cannes Film Festival 2019, the film by Marco Bellocchio was very well received during its official screening. “For an Italian film to be of interest to a major American player such as Sony confers a real sense of prestige, as this doesn’t happen very often with our films”, commented Paolo Del Brocco, Managing Director of RAI Cinema who supported the film produced by IBC Movie, Kavac Film, Ad Vitam, Match Factory Productions and Brazilian firm Gullane. “This acquisition suggests the The Traitor will benefit from wide and extensive distribution throughout the United States”.

The picture, starring Pierfrancesco Favino in the role of the first big mafia informant Tommaso Buscetta, has already been sold in over 20 countries around the world and negotiations are ongoing with a number of other territories. In Italy, where the film was released on 23 May via 01 Distribution, coinciding with its presentation in Cannes, it claimed second position at the box office with takings of 108,640 euros.
