After last year’s successful first edition, European Work in Progress Cologne (EWIP), an independent industry event organised by AG Verleih - Association of German Independent Film Distributors and mainly supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, is ready to enter its second round. The second edition of the event, which creates opportunities for carefully selected arthouse projects to meet appropriate distributors, co-producers, world sales agents and festival representatives, kicks off today and will unspool from 14-16 October in the German city of Cologne, during the Film Festival Cologne.

“The great response to European Work in Progress Cologne shows that our joint initiative came at the right time. The extension to documentary films, which are particularly strong in North-Rhine-Westphalia, was the next logical step,” says Petra Müller, CEO of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. “All participating industry representatives can look forward to inspiring and creatively convincing projects. Last year’s films have already achieved noticeable success. . We wish all of the creative minds presenting their projects in 2019 that same kind of success.”

This year, European Work in Progress Cologne will showcase 28 projects that are currently in production or post-production, four of which are documentaries and one is an animation. During the event, they will be presented to industry professionals at pitching sessions as well as one-to-one meetings. A series of panel talks will complement the programme. On Tuesday 15 October, EWIP, in cooperation with Creative Europe Desk Germany, will host a panel entitled “Best Practice – International Distribution & Marketing Strategies for European Arthouse Cinema”. A panel on the MEDIA Selective Distribution Scheme (in cooperation with Creative Europe Desk NRW) will take place the following day.

A high-profile jury – comprising Lili Hinstin, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival; Margrit Stärk, director of acquisitions for Feature Films at ZDF EnterprisesSabina Kodra, the co-founder of Albanian film production company ERAFILM; and Yohann Comte, sales agent and co-founder of world sales agency Charades in France – will decide on the winners of the second edition of European Work in Progress Cologne. A total sum of €45,000, including post-production services and international festival publicity, will be handed out at this year’s EWIP by sponsors ARRI Media, K13 Studios, Eclair, LAVAlabs Moving Images and ZOOM Medienfabrik.
