, a film that will tell the story of the late and highly influential German writer, poet, dramatist and filmmaker Thomas Brasch.

Albrecht Schuch will star as the artist who, in the 1960s, attracted the attention of the East German authorities by denigrating leading figures at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and who was later arrested for handing out flyers objecting to the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. Brasch made an application to emigrate and was able to leave for the West in 1976. The film aims to let the audience re-discover an artist who embodied the rift between the two Germanies like few before or after him.

Thomas Wendrich wrote the script for the biopic, which will also star Peter Kremer, Jella Haase, Jörg Schüttauf, Anja Schneider, Joel Basman, Iona Jacob and Paula Hans. The film was shot in black and white by Kleinert’s regular collaborator Johann Feindt last year, on location in Berlin, Cologne, Solingen, Bochum, Cannes, Wrocław, Legnica, Brandenburg and New York.

Dear Thomas is being produced by German outfit Zeitsprung Pictures (Michael Souvignier, Till Derenbach) in association with NDR, BR, WDR and ARTE. Germany’s The Match Factory will handle the world sales for the feature, which was backed by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), German Federal Film Board (FFA) and German Federal Film Fund (DFFF).
