was shot in September 2019 (see the news), enjoyed its premiere during the first weekend of the Málaga Film Festival (in August last year) and was released in Spanish cinemas in December, on the eve of the Christmas festivities, after various delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Directed by Daniel Calparsoro and with a screenplay penned by the man who writes (virtually) all action films in Spain, Jorge Guerricaechevarría (his fourth partnership with another Daniel, this time Monzón, is currently in the pipeline – see the news), the feature starring Miguel Herrán, Carolina Yuste, Asia Ortega and Luis Tosar has so far grossed more than €1.7 million, which makes it a big hit bearing in mind the capacity restrictions imposed on theatres by the health authorities.

So now, Netflix, that well-meaning platform that seems able to reach all manner of audiences (from fans of mainstream flicks to those in search of meatier arthouse titles), has acquired the worldwide rights to it in order to turn it into a series with exactly the same crew at the helm. However, it will not trundle out the same plot that we are already familiar with (a young man from the outskirts of Madrid attempting to climb the ranks of society with no inhibitions); rather, it will be what our American cousins call a spin-off, and which Spaniards simply label a sequel or a continuation. Indeed, the action starts where the film left off; therefore, we’re talking about new, original content here.

The screenplay is still being written and the cast has not yet been firmed up, although it would not be surprising if Herrán, a familiar face in the Netflix stable thanks to his involvement in the successful series Money Heist (the masterminds behind which, Álex Pina and Esther Martínez, already have a new series, Sky Rojo, ready – a “Latin pulp” show that the platform will air from 19 March onwards), carried on playing the thrusting Ángel. Production duties are being handled by Vaca Films, a Galician company that was behind the original feature film, which will incidentally be available to watch on Netflix after its run in Spanish theatres.

Netflix also has the youth-orientated series Tú no eres especial in progress, a comedy that will be shot imminently in Navarre. It was created by Estíbaliz Burgaleta (the script coordinator on Skam España) and has Puy Oria on board as executive producer (Oria Films). It depicts the life of 16-year-old Amaia, which is, in her own words, shit. That’s because, out of the blue, she is forced to say goodbye to Barcelona, where all of her friends live and where she enjoys living within her comfort zone, to head off to her mother’s home town, where nothing happens, ever. However, soon enough, she will discover that she has, perhaps, inherited her grandmother’s powers: a woman reputed to be the only witch ever to have lived in the town.
