After taking place entirely online in 2020, EFP’s (European Film Promotion) Future Frames – Generation NEXT of European Cinema returns with a physical presence in 2021. European Film Promotion will be presenting ten selected films directed by some of the most promising European film students and graduates at the 55th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF), which will be held from 20-28 August.

The filmmakers are nominated by their countries’ national film promotion institutes, with the final selection being made by KVIFF’s artistic director, Karel Och, and his programme team. The young directors will be offered a two-part schedule this year, with an online pre-programme including pitching training sessions and industry meetings (17-19 August), and the presentation of their films during the festival (22-24 August). The three-day, on-site programme will be rounded off by a master class.

The films on offer represent a diverse range of themes and approaches, with some already receiving notoriety in the industry, including the winner of the 2020 Gold Medal (International Category) at the Student Academy Awards and numerous winners of international awards and plaudits.

“We are thrilled that the young talents will have the opportunity again this year to present their films on site, in person, to the public and press at the festival. It is so important for all of the filmmakers to see the audience’s reactions and to get in touch with the public, and even more so when they are at the very beginning of their careers. We thank the KVIFF for such a valuable continuous cooperation and our members for nominating excellent short films whose directors we will certainly meet again in the future,” says EFP’s managing director, Sonja Heinen.

“KVIFF is back in its desired and long-appreciated physical version, and so is the Future Frames programme. We proudly present this exciting selection of ten shorts curated by my colleagues Anna Korinek and Sandra Hezinova, and look forward to welcoming ten young European filmmakers to Karlovy Vary,” states Karel Och.
