Based on true events and inspired by the director’s own experience working as a model in the fashion scene of the German Democratic Republic in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the film will centre on a young machinist named Suzie, who, after being photographed by chance on the way to work one day, becomes the cover model of Sibylle, a renowned fashion magazine, often referred to as the “Vogue of the East”. As she delves into the underground scene of East Berlin, she falls in love with Coyote, a photographer who urges her to flee with him to the West. Yet the decision turns out to be a tough one for Suzie to make.

Marlene Burow will star as Suzie in the upcoming film. David Schütter, Sabin Tambrea, Claudia Michelsen, Jördis Triebel, Helene Grass, Sven-Eric Bechtolf and Bernd Hölscher are also among the cast. Benedict Neuenfels is on board as the cinematographer.

“Our film celebrates women as heroines: independent and proud, life-smart and vulnerable, doubting and yet always able to rise again,” stated producers Tanja Ziegler and Susa Kusche.

The production was backed by institutions such as Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM), the German Minister of Culture and Media (BKM), MFG Baden-Württemberg and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF). Ziegler Film (Tanja Ziegler, Susa Kusche) is producing the movie. Tobis Film (Peter Eiff, Timm Oberwelland, Theodor Gringel), Babelsberg Film (Christoph Fisser, Charlie Woebcken) and Gretchenfilm (Annegret Weitkämper-Krug) are on board as co-producers. They are all German firms.

Shooting started on 13 April and took place in Thüringen, Sachsen, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Los Angeles. Beta Cinema is handling the world sales, and Tobis Film will handle the German release of the film, which is scheduled for 2022.
