The Thessaloniki Documentary Festival’s (TDF’s) Agora Docs has announced its award winners, while the market will still continue its initiatives and activities until the end of the festival itself (20 March). This year, Agora Docs ran as a hybrid event that unspooled both in physical spaces in Thessaloniki and online, with more than 210 international guests attending on site and 50 online, thus giving a clear sign that the industry is ready to get back to “business as usual”.

In the Thessaloniki Pitching Forum, the co-production and co-financing platform of the TDF intended for creative and TV documentaries, as well as for new-media documentaries (using both virtual and enhanced reality), the international jury consisted of Krishan Arora, international content consultant, SBS Australia; Stephanie Fuchs, festivals manager for Autlook Filmsales; and Greek film director Angelos Kovotsos. They picked Harvest Moon, directed by Rama Ayasra and produced by Mariam Salim (New Productions) and Asmahan Bkerat, as the winner of the €2,000 Thessaloniki Pitching Forum Award, as it “promised a cinematic language to tell what may appear to be a small story, but is one with global relevance”.

Greek director Dimitris Gkotsis’s Sunken, which is being produced by Mina Dreki (Marni Films), received the €2,000 ERT – Thessaloniki Pitching Forum Award, intended for a Greek project in the selection, as “the multi-layered story, exciting visuals and character-driven approach all point to a film that can immerse the audience in the reality both above and below the surface. It's a film that needs to be made now.”

The DAE (Documentary Association of Europe) Award, offering consultations and a free DAE membership, was granted to the Italian-US project The Floating World by Fernando Souza, which “invites us into a fascinating world to discover a complex character on a journey to find and redefine his own identity, and explore the protective shields he has built to survive”. Greek filmmaker Steve Krikris’s Super Paradise received the Aylon Productions Digital Services Award, which will offer the digitisation of the film, as the helmer was deemed to have “a real passion to find film and video from around the world revealing both the history of a lost paradise, and the people that shaped it”.

The Beldocs Award went to Caution, Risk of Falling Exhibits! by Slovak directors Jana Durajova and Lena Kusnierikova, as it “reflects on the process of change and the necessity of culture, and does so by adopting a patient approach in the best traditions of observational documentary”. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Film Institute (MFI) Award, which offers an MFI Script2Film Workshop DocLab scholarship of €2,000, as well as accommodation on the islands of Nisyros and Rhodes, where the MFI workshop takes place, was given to Honeydew by Marco Bergonzi and Michael Petrolini, “a very attractive project, with strong international potential, led by a young, talented and promising team”.

In the Docs in Progress section, the jury comprised Martin Horyna, programmer at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival; Phaedra Vokali, producer at Late Bloomers; and Jeffrey Winter, distributor at The Film Collaborative. They bestowed the 2|35 Post-production Award upon λesvia, The Herstory of Eressos, directed and produced by Tzeli Hadjidimitriou (Anemos Dimiourgias), for “the important role it can play in the recognition and preservation of LGBT history, and the inspiration it can provide for generations to come”. The project also received the Onassis Cinema Award, which comes with a cash prize of €5,000, a new accolade aiming to support the Greek industry.

Citizen Miko, directed by Czech filmmaker Robin Kvapil and produced by Martina Strunc (Silk Films), received the Music and Sound Services Award by MuSou Music Group. The Greek Film Centre Award, endowed with €3,000, went to #METISOFIA by director Vania Turner, as it “highlights an important subject matter that has stirred social and political change in contemporary Greece. It’s change that we would like to see spread and create accountability.”

The Neaniko Plano Subtitling Award was granted to The Love Room by Macedonian filmmaker-producer Suzana Dinevski, “for its cinematic feel and access to a difficult subject matter in a region that is not often in the spotlight, in a language we do not hear often on screen, which made us want to see this film completed”.

Finally, the Guidance Award by Paradiddle Pictures, providing advice on distribution, festivals, outreach and impact to one project in the Agora Lab section, will be announced on Saturday along with the main festival awards.
