The 25th edition of the Málaga Film Festival kicked off on 18 March, and its industry sidebar will once again be playing host to the gathering’s MAFIZ (Málaga Festival Industry Zone) activities. Standing out among these is the fifth edition of Málaga Work in Progress, which will unpsool from 21-25 March, this year in an in-person format.

The aim of this event is to facilitate the completion of films in the post-production phase, as well as furthering their funding, circulation, promotion and international distribution, by putting the filmmakers in touch with various industry professionals. So, to this end, the 14 titles that have been selected for this edition (six of which are Spanish and eight Latin American) will be screened in front of the accredited attendees, who include sales agents, international distributors, festival programmers, international fund representatives and producers. Furthermore, the teams behind the films will also have the chance to present them during a pitching session and set up meetings with potential interested partners.

A jury made up of various professionals working in the sector will be tasked with deciding on the winners of the Málaga Festival Award, endowed with €5,000 for a Latin American project and another €5,000 for a Spanish one. In addition, all of the films that are taking part in the event will also be eligible to go head to head for the following prizes: Aracne Digital Cinema will hand out an award for the post-production and creation of the final copy of one of the projects, worth €20,000; Damita Joe will grant a national distribution award; Latamcinema.com will give out a prize consisting of a full-page advert in the LatAm Cinema magazine for a Latin American project; Latido Films will offer a €15,000 award in the form of the pre-purchase of distribution rights; the ACORDE Musical Supervision division of Music Library &SFX will grant a €300 accolade, as well as a flat fee for production services worth €300 for a Latin American project and a matching award for a Spanish one; and, lastly, Yagán Films will give out a sound post-production prize, valued at €13,000.

In addition, partner festivals such as Abycine, REC Tarragona, FIDBA (Buenos Aires Documentary Film Festival) and Sanfic Industria (Santiago International Film Festival) have committed to selecting a project from Málaga WIP to take part in their upcoming industry labs.

Málaga WIP is organised in conjunction with the ICAA (Spanish Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute), CAACI (Conference of Latin American Film and Audiovisual Authorities), IBERMEDIA and FIPCA (Latin American Federation of Film and Audiovisual Producers).
