On Sunday 20 March, the sixth edition of the Ibizacinefest – Ibiza International Independent Film Festival came to a close after having unspooled on the famous Mediterranean island since the 11^th. As is to be expected at any self-respecting film gathering, that day saw the handing out of its awards, and the winning title in its Panorama section was the culinary-themed documentary flick with a hint of bittersweet comedy Lobster Soup [+lire aussi :

fiche film] (Spain/Lithuania/Iceland), helmed by directorial duo Pepe Andrés and Rafa Moles. In the same sidebar, a Special Mention was bestowed upon the Mexican production Beautiful Losers, a road movie with added fugitives by Guillermo Margariños.

In the festival’s other official section, dubbed Humans in Focus, which, as its name suggests, turns its attention to people, the victor was the family drama The Saint of the Impossible (Switzerland) by Marc Wilkins (which was also deemed deserving of the Critics’ Award – Blogos de Oro), with a Special Mention (plus the Distribution Award, courtesy of #ConUnPack Distribution) going to Ricochet [+lire aussi :

As for new Spanish films, the winner in this particular section was the documentary Pedra Patria, the feature debut by Maciá Florit, which explores the ins and outs of the island of Menorca, while Losing It All, a rural thriller by Víctor Cerdán, picked up a Special Mention.

Another Spanish non-fiction effort, Ancient Soul [+lire aussi :

fiche film] by Álvaro Gurrea, scooped two prizes: the Best Editing Award and the Docma Award for Best Documentary, whereas the Audience Award went to the Dutch documentary Stop Filming Us, helmed by Boris Jostema, which was included as one of the festival’s special screenings.

Standing out among the short films were Italy’s La pescatora by Lucia Loré (FEM-Cine Award), I Don’t Feel at Home Anywhere Anymore (Belgium) by Liv Li (Best International Short) and Mindanao by Valencian native Borja Soler, which stars Carmen Machi as a lesbian politician who gets mixed up in some murky affairs, thus bearing a certain resemblance to recent real-life Spanish politics.

As for the industry section, the Ibiza Script Festival Award was presented to In the Serge and the Broad Arrow (Ireland) by Bobby Maloney, with Special Mentions going to Rutina (Spain) by Nerea Úbeda and Six to Wash (USA) by Joshua Allen.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that in IBZCF Pitching-Spanish Projects, the fiction films Mario by Guillem Miró, Tal vez by Arima León and Entre cerzas by Clara Santaolaya were selected, alongside the documentary Paredes en la carretera by Bárbara Fernández. Meanwhile, in the IBZCF VR Lab, the three projects taking part were Kolbe (Poland) by Pavel Jozwiak, The Eyes of Mila Kaos (Spain) by Yimit Ramírez, and Together Apart (Netherlands) by Demian Albers and Micha Hamel.
