The awards ceremony of the inaugural edition of the Evia Film Project, a brand-new, green-orientated industry initiative organised by the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (15-19 June), was held on Saturday 18 June at Edipsos’ Thermae Sylla Hotel.

The event’s host, Vassilis Terzopoulos, first gave the floor to the general director of the Thessaloniki Film Festival, Elise Jalladeau, and to the artistic director, Orestis Andreadakis (see the interview). Terzopoulos went on to introduce the jury, comprising Rea Apostolides (producer at Greece’s Anemon Production), Caroline Libresco (curator, producer, programme director and story consultant for Gabbert/Libresco Projects) and Edvinas Puksta (Lithuanian programmer for the Tallinn Black Nights International Film Festival), before inviting Soňa Morgenthalová to hand over the Evia Film Project in Development: MIDPOINT Institute Consultation Award.

The prize went to György Mór Kárpáti’s Falling Into Silence (Hungary), described by the jury as “an ambitious biopic project about a scientist who discovers the hidden mechanisms of nature while struggling to understand his own kind and the mechanisms of love”.

Later, Libresco announced the winner of the Pitch the Doc Consultation Award, which went to Dimitris Gkotsis Sunken (Greece), labelled by the jury as “a film that will shine a light on an urgent crisis from two perspectives: above and below the water”.

The Special Jury Prize for Creative Vision was next in line, announced by Apostolides. The accolade was bestowed upon Yordan Petkov’s Resonance (Bulgaria), billed as “a powerful debut film that captures the anxieties of our times through rich characters whose values collide in the natural world”.

The Evia Film Project in Development Award, accompanied by a €4,000 prize, was announced by Puksta and went to Natasha Blatsiou’s Unwritten Land (Greece/Estonia). According to the jury, the project “immerses us in the lives of individual characters and an ancient community in transition to tell a story with global implications”.

Finally, the Evia Film Project in Progress Award, accompanied by a €6,000 cash prize and announced by Libresco, went to Bojan Tanturovski’s Garden (North Macedonia), “an emotional film about the profundity of what’s right in front of us, and the meaning we can draw from our connection to the land and each other as we age”.
