fiche film]) is making the leap to film directing with Un mal día lo tiene cualquiera (lit. “Anyone Can Have a Bad Day” – one of its working titles at the project stage was Idiotizadas), a comedy being co-produced by Álex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang, starring Ana Polvorosa (who graced Spanish screens last Friday in Piety [+lire aussi :

fiche film]), Juriji Der Klee (a former contestant on Drag Race España), Aníbal Gómez (a well-known comedian and member of the group Ojete Calor), Goize Blanco and Ariana Martínez. The shoot kicked off on 19 October before wrapping in early December, taking in several Madrid locations.

The screenplay (penned by María Elena Morales García) recounts the odyssey of Sonia (played by Ana Polvorosa), a responsible, meticulously organised woman with a very firmly entrenched set of rules who, to cap it all, lives alone with her cat in the middle of the Spanish capital. However, over the course of a single night, and on the eve of an important exam that could potentially give her the stable job she so desperately yearns for, this textbook control freak will be compelled to do all the things she has never dared to do in her 36 years on the planet.

The first-time director stated: “I’ve shot a film. Never in my life, nor in my sweetest dreams or my worst nightmares, could I have imagined the state of physical and emotional upheaval that I’ve been in during the last six weeks. Was it worth it? Of course it was. While struggling to decide whether to vomit or cry tears of happiness, what I feel for certain is infinite gratitude. Because I’ve learned much more than I could have imagined: a profession.”

The producers asserted: “This film has been something of a metaphor for the story that our lead character lives through. It’s been a test of survival in a crazy, chaotic Madrid where we were able to cope with the cold, the rain and the setbacks thanks to the sense of humour and the patience of the cast and crew. Not only do we depict a capital city after dark, but we also take an edgy look at the metropolis on a journey from the best-known parts of the centre out to the more undiscovered outskirts.”

Un mal día lo tiene cualquiera is a production by Pokeepsie Films (the firm headed up by Álex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang), Atresmedia Cine and Chicas del Barroco AIE. It has secured funding from the ICAA, and boasts the involvement of Atresmedia and Movistar Plus+. Its Spanish theatrical distribution will be entrusted to Warner Bros Entertainment Spain.
