Panayiota Vladi • Actress

Shooting Star 2007 – Greece

by

Greece’s Shooting Star 2007 Panayiota Vladi has made a name for herself through roles in some of Greek television’s popular series of recent times. However, after an admittedly successful feature film debut she is now happy to alternate roles between the silver and small screens.

Cineuropa: How did you start your acting career and what were your initial expectations as an actress?
Panayiota Vladi: I was attracted to acting through black and white films I watched as a young girl - my favourites being movies with Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Errol Flynn and Greek films of the 1960s and 70s. I graduated from the George Theodosiadis Drama School and at the beginning I was a theatre actress only. My expectations were to have good partnerships and a lasting career.

Five More Minutes (Pente lepta akomi) is your first feature after a steady television career. Has this experience helped you shape an opinion about the so-called “new Greek cinema”?
People in Greek cinema make efforts to create a new situation with scripts and emerging directors. In recent years we have seen commercial films of good quality.

Do you believe in the co-production trend in European cinema? What do you expect from an initiative like Shooting Stars?
Through co-productions we have seen more expensive productions and, what’s more, the promotion of Greek cinema in Europe, which is very important for everyone involved in filmmaking. A recent example is the film Eduart [+see also:

which was a German/Greek co-production.

During Shooting Stars I expect to meet with casting agents and directors. It will be a big pleasure and honour for me to meet fellow actresses and actors from Europe. Besides, walking down the red carpet has always been one of my dreams… I look forward to having a good time at the festival’s events and parties.

Are you planning to continue working in cinema or do you prefer television?
I am in the middle of discussions about both the big screen and TV [projects]. I plan to continue being an actress so I insist in working in both cinema and TV. It’s tiring sometimes, but I hope to manage both.
