Grzegorz Hajdarowicz

Producers on the move 2008 - Poland

Cineuropa: What is your background and how did you become a producer?
Grzegorz Hajdarowicz: I've always been in love with films, I even wanted to study directing but eventually graduated from International and Political Studies at Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Than a couple of years later I got involved in the movie An Angel in Love, made by my friends, and that's when I decided to treat my film passion seriously.

What is your company’s production philosophy?
I represent a boutique company – I’ve never wanted to own a film factory so I am satisfied to produce one to two films a year with the rule that each subsequent film has a bigger budget and bigger names.

How do you choose projects? What qualities must a project have to catch your attention?
Making movies is an art but also a business and that’s way I want to make films that represent values, tell interesting stories and at the same time have commercial potential. My objective is to make films for wide audiences appreciated all over the world.

Do you have international perspectives involving co-producing with other European countries?
After the latest Berlinale my company received a lot of interest from British producers, which thrills me as I have projects in development whose action is based in London as well as Krakow. After entering the EU, Poland has renewed its friendship with UK, which so far has not been widely reflected in the films, however. I think that both countries have a great opportunity to make co-productions.

With which countries do you co-produce the most?
My company is a young one but as so far we have done two international co-productions: Nightwatching [+leggi anche:

by Peter Greenaway which is multi-national project, as well as Carmo by Murilo Pasta, is a Polish/Spanish/Brazilian film.

How do you feel about being selected as a Producer on the Move 2008?
The moment I learnt about the selection it convinced to go to Cannes this year because I am busy with two film projects at the moment and I was afraid I would not find the time. Moreover, Carmo will have its premiere at this year’s festival so I hope to have a very productive experience and make lots of new contacts.
