On Thursday 30 June, the audience of the Série Series Festival in Fontainebleau was able to get an early glimpse of the first episode of the Danish television series The Day Will Come by Jesper W Nielsen, who has worked on several shows, including Borgen (2011-2013) and Dicte – Crime Reporter (2014).

Adapted from a true story, the screenplay, written by Søren Sveistrup, takes place in 1967 and follows Elmer and Erik, two young brothers from Copenhagen who have been placed in a behind-the-times orphanage. The director of the orphanage, Heck, rules the general goings-on with an iron fist. Between punishment and mistreatment, the two children, with some assistance from some of the other residents, try to take a stand against the director and his reign of tyranny.

was originally a feature film, which hit Danish screens in April 2016. “The screenplay hasn’t been rewritten, but some scenes have been extended,” Pernille Bech Christensen, the producer from TV2, explained. “New characters have been added, as have different parts of the story.”

The Day Will Come, produced by Zentropa, should be broadcast in a prime-time slot (9pm) on the public channel TV2 in April 2017, no doubt in the form of a three-day marathon event.
