The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has revealed the speakers at the seventh annual Screenwriters’ Lecture Series. The lectures will commence on 7 October with US playwright, screenwriter and director Kenneth Lonergan. His plaudits include screenplay nominations at the Oscars and the BAFTAs for Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York (2002), the Sutherland Trophy at the British Film Institute (BFI) London Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and the Writers Guild of America Best Screenplay prize for You Can Count on Me (2000), which he also directed. His latest film as Writer/Director, Manchester by the Sea, has received festival play at Sundance, Telluride and Toronto and will show in New York, Vancouver and London in October.

Next up is German director, screenwriter and producer Maren Ade on 9 October. She won the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005 for The Forest for the Trees and the Jury Grand Prix at the Berlin International Film Festival, the FIPRESCI Prize and Best Director at the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema for Everyone Else [+leggi anche:

(2016) is currently the toast of the festival circuit, having won the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes, the Golden Iris, Special Prize of the Jury and RTBF TV Prize at the Brussels International Film Festival, FIPRESCI Film of the Year at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the Norwegian Film Critics Award at the Norwegian International Film Festival, in addition to being Germany’s entry to the foreign language Oscars. 

Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook will deliver his lecture on 22 October. In a career littered with awards, prominent are the Jury Prize at Cannes for Thirst (2009) and the Grand Prize of the Jury, also at Cannes for Old Boy (2003). He also won the Little Golden Lion, CinemAvvenire Award and the Young Cinema Award at Venice for Lady Vengeance (2005); Best Screenplay at Sitges for I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK in 2007; and the Tiger Award at Rotterdam in 2003 for Jealousy Is My Middle Name. His latest, The Handmaiden, has seen festival play at Cannes, Sydney, Karlovy Vary, Jerusalem, Melbourne and Toronto and will bow in Vancouver and London in October.

Audiences will also hear from US screenwriters, producers, directors, actors and animators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, winners of the BAFTA Best Animated Feature and the BAFTA Children’s Award for Best Feature for The Lego Movie (2014). Their credits also include 21 Jump Street (2012), 22 Jump Street (2014) and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (2009). A date will be announced later.

The series is funded by JJ Charitable Trust and created by screenwriter Jeremy Brock, Best Screenplay BAFTA winner for The Last King of Scotland [+leggi anche:
