In its first session for 2018, German regional fund FFF Bayern has granted a total of €7.25 million to 42 projects, including 12 film productions (for a total of €4.6 million).

The highest amount granted for a film production (€864,000) went to the family title Sprite Sisters – Vier zauberhafte Schwestern by Sven Unterwaldt, a Blue Eyes Fiction production adapted from Sheridan Winn's series of children's books, featuring four witch sisters whose powers only reach their full potential when they are together. One-quarter of the film will be shot in Bavaria, and the region has supported this project ever since it was in development.

Also amongst the FFF Bayern-supported feature projects is Abel Ferrara's latest, Siberia, about a man who is searching for inner peace in the tundra, only to find he cannot escape his demons. One-quarter of the shoot will take place in Bavaria. Siberia is a co-production between Italy's Vivo Film and Munich-based outfit Maze Pictures, which received €300,000 for the project.

The highest subsidy in this round of support (€900,000, out of a total of €1.14 million for TV productions) went to the 6x45-minute period series Oktoberfest, directed by Florian Schwarz (mostly known for his work as a television director, as well as the film Let the Cat Out of the Bag) for Bavaria's public broadcasting service BR. The events recounted in the series unfold in 1898, a time of great technological innovation and rampant racism, around the struggle of a Nuremberg native, Georg Prank, to pitch his tent at the world-famous Munich-based beerpalooza known as Octoberfest. The series is being produced by Zeitsprung Pictures and Violet Pictures.
