The CineLink Work in Progress section is dedicated to offering a wide selection of films that are currently entering the post-production phase and have a release planned in the next few months. This year, the section expanded even further, not only covering South-Eastern Europe and the MENA region, but also welcoming a guest project from China. Zavera, Africa and Ibrahim shared the awards, worth €95,000, as the overall winners of the section. The films were screened during the CineLink Industry Days, and more than 60 representatives of film festivals, sales agencies and distribution companies were in attendance. The section was coordinated by Alex Traila.
Here we offer a detailed presentation of the projects, starting with the winners (read the news on the CineLink Awards), as selected by the international jury comprising Gabor Greiner (Films Boutique), Marco Mueller (Pingyao Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon International Film Festival), Tolke Palm (The Post Republic), Serkan Yildirim (Turkish National Radio Television) and Kim Yutani (Sundance Film Festival).
The TRT Award, which comes with €25,000, was won by Zavera by Andrei Gruzsniczki (The Escape). Ștefan, a 50-year-old businessman, has started a company with his best friend, Nic. After Nic’s sudden and suspicious death, Ștefan will slowly discover lies and hidden information about his friend that he must deal with. The film is a Romanian production by Alexandru Teodorescu (Saga Film); it is in post-production, and is looking for co-producers, post-production partners, a sales agent and distribution.
The Post Republic Award, consisting of in-kind post-production services worth €50,000, went to Africa by Oren Gerner, a debut feature. Meir, a retired engineer, discovers that after 30 years, he’s no longer responsible for organising the traditional ceremony of his village, as this task has now been delegated to the local youth. With his health declining rapidly, Meir will embark on a journey to reconstruct himself. The film is an Israeli production by Itay Akirav (Film Harbour); it is in post-production and is seeking post-production funds, a world sales agent and distribution.
The CineLink Iridium Award, comprising in-kind post-production services worth €20,000, was bestowed upon Ibrahim by Lina Al-Abed, a documentary. The film deals with the disappearance of the director’s father, Ibrahim, who was a secret member of the Palestinian Militant Organisation Revolutionary Council (Abu Nidal), known for its suspicious intelligence activities, in 1987, when she was just five years old. The film is a Lebanese-Palestinian-Qatari-Danish co-production by Rami El Nihawi (SakaDo) and Kirstine Barfod Film. It is in the late stages of post-production, and the team is looking for sales agents, distributors, festivals, and partners to finalise the project.

Following a murder that took place 15 years ago, the film undertakes a detailed examination of this criminal case and the story behind the initial meeting of the perpetrators. The film is a Turkish-French co-production by Selman Nacar (Fol Film) and Kerem Ayan. It is currently in the editing bay and is looking for gap financing from possible co-producers and sales agents.

Based loosely on real events, the film follows a crucial period in British history: the housing crisis in London and other cities, Brexit, gentrification and the acceptance of immigrants in this newly formatted society. The film is a Bulgarian-British-French co-production by the directors’ company, Activsit38, with Lambros Atteshlis (Glasshead Limited) and Christophe Bruncher (Ici et Là Productions), with the support of the Bulgarian National Television. There is a rough cut at this stage, and the team is looking for sales agents and festivals.
Legacy by Dorian Boguță, a debut (see the news). After the disappearance of acclaimed pianist Anton Ropot, the police investigation will reveal his troubled past, which includes strange family relationships, personal troubles and obsessions with his legacy. The film is a Romanian production by Oana Giurgiu (Hai Hui Entertainment); it is entering post-production and is now looking for post-production funds, sales agents and festivals.
The Motherlands by Gabriel Babsi, a debut documentary. For the past six years, the director has been following Hervé, a former soldier and father of three who fled the Ivory Coast following the country’s second Civil War. In 2012, he reached Greece and stayed there as an irregular immigrant. He also met a local girl, and they had a baby together. He now has to strike a balance between his two possible lives and families in Europe and in Africa. The documentary is a Hungarian-Romanian co-production by Ágnes Horváth-Szabó and András Pires Muhi (ELF Pictures) with Anamaria Antoci (Domestic Film), and is in post-production. It intends to find co-producers, funds for post-production, pre-sales and sales agents, as well as a festival premiere.
Two more projects from the region participated in the section: Hilal, Feza and Other Planets by Turkish filmmaker and writer Kutluğ Ataman (The Lamb [+leggi anche:
