Written by David Perrault, the screenplay starts when the American Civil War breaks out... A family of french settlers must abandon their Missouri home to flee and go back to Paris. Edmond (Todeschini), the patriarch, is accompanied by his wife Madeleine (Dollé), Layla (Abibou), his servant, and his three daughters: Esther (Isaaz), Justine (François) and Abigaëlle (Bertiaux). The youngest of them, Esther, is irresistibly attracted to their escort, Victor (Janssens), a former mercenary who behaves somewhat oddly. Their relationship beings to poison relations among the group of travellers ... Especially when Victor's troubled past catches up with him. A story that, according to the director, won’t be "so much a western as a romantic adventure film" and will see "a group of women, gradually break away from the chains that bind them to men."

Produced by Fares Ladjimi for Mille et Une Productions (already a partner of the director's first feature film), Savage State was co-produced by UProduction and the Canadian outfit Metafilm. Pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature film was financed by the Ile-de-France and New Aquitaine regions, the Gan Foundation for Cinema, the CNC's new technologies fund, and the Franco-Canadian mini-treaty. Shooting will take place in Île-de-France, Aquitaine and Canada from 24 September to 22 November. Pyramide will be driving French and international sales.

For the record, Mille et Une Productions also produced L’Afrance and Andalucia [+leggi anche:
