The Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg has announced the recipients of its latest grants for experimental film. Highly acclaimed filmmakers and artists popular for their previous video installations have been selected to receive financial aid from the institution.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s much-awaited Memoria [+leggi anche:

, which is to star Tilda Swinton, has received the largest subsidy (€50,000). The Colombian-set film, which has also been backed by IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund (see the news), will explore the country’s colonial history and is being produced by Match Factory Productions.

The second-largest grant (€30,000) went to Albert Serra’s Liberté [+leggi anche:

. The stage play of the same name directed by the Catalan artist for the Volksbühne in Berlin earlier this year followed a group of French Libertines who went into exile in Germany shortly before the French Revolution. The film is being produced by Lupa Film.

Furthermore, three projects have been supported with an amount of €25,000 each: Isabell Heimerdinger’s Cool IslandsRoee Rosen’s Kafka for Kids (produced by Volte Slagen) and Clemens von Wedemeyer’s Montagendemonstration (an Austrian production). 

Four additional projects have each been backed by the German institution to the tune of €20,000: The President by Yael BartanaHavelland Fontane by Bernhard SallmannA Treatise on Limnology by Dane Komljen and James Lattimer (produced by Flaneur Films), and Theater of the Invisible by Sasha Litvintseva and Beny Wagner

Finally, Ati Maier has received €10,000 worth of support for her film Beyond the Wall, which is being staged by FilmKunstKommerz Klaus Knoesel Filmproduktion.
