Loosely inspired by Antonioni’s The Passenger, Miss Osaka follows 24-year-old Ines (Sonne), who wants to change who she is and become someone else in order to cover up her insecurities. When she accompanies her boyfriend Lucas (Følsgaard) on a business trip to Norway, Ines meets a half-Japanese tourist, Maria (Nagisa Morimoto), who instantly fascinates her. Suddenly Maria disappears, and Ines seizes the opportunity to replace her – she declares herself dead and travels to Japan in order to take over Maria’s identity. There, she will get a job at Miss Osaka, the same nightclub where Maria used to work. A game of broken boundaries, lost identities and the dangerous balance between reality and the past has begun, and Ines must abide by the new rules by avoiding the more obscure paths.

Aside from Sonne and Følsgaard, who will play the two main Western roles, the Japanese cast includes Mirai Moriyama, Kaho Minami, Junko Abe and Nagisa Morimoto. The script for Miss Osaka, which is a commentary on the existential crisis faced by modern society, was written by Dencik and Sara Vedde Jønsson, who also co-wrote Gold Coast.

Miss Osaka started shooting in Norway in September and will continue principal photography in Japan in January; it is the first-ever co-production between Denmark and Japan. Michael Haslund-Christensen, in his third collaboration with Dencik, is producing for their jointly owned Copenhagen-based company Haslund/Dencik Entertainment, in conjunction with Japan’s C&I Entertainment and Norway’s Rein Film. The film is supported by the Danish Film Institute, Filmfond Nord and FilmCamp AS. The premiere is expected to take place in spring 2020.
