Three weeks away from the unveiling of the Official Selection of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival (which will unspool from 14-25 May 2019), the identity of the Un Certain Regard jury chair has been made public: it will be none other than Lebanese director Nadine Labaki, who thus follows in the footsteps of Puerto Rican actor Benicio Del Toro, who was last year’s jury chair.

The three features helmed by the filmmaker (who is also a screenwriter and actress) have all been screened on the Croisette: Caramel [+leggi anche:

, which took home the Jury Prize from the official competition last year before going on to be nominated for the Golden Globes and the Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film.

“I remember back when I used to come to Cannes as a film student, I was so excited to experience the world's most prestigious festival,” Nadine Labaki stated. “Back then, it seemed so out of reach to me. I remember getting up early in the morning and the endless queues to get a ticket. It seems like only yesterday, but it was 15 years ago that I filled in the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation registration form, my heart full of hope and my hand shaking. Today, I am the president of the Un Certain Regard jury, which just goes to show that sometimes life can be even better than your dreams. I can't wait to see the films in the selection. I can't wait to debate and discuss, to be shaken up, and to find inspiration in other artists' work.”
