“The aim of the Plan Séries is to support the most creative works that have strong international potential.” Taking full advantage of the spotlight currently trained on the Séries Mania festival (which will draw to a close on Saturday 30 March in Lille – see the news), Frédérique Bredin, the president of the CNC, has outlined the guiding principles of the first component in a strategic intervention by the public authorities in order to support original French series.

Three measures dedicated to backing original series are in the pipeline. The first, which aims to foster the development of new formats in order to meet international demand and the expectations of young audiences, will allow the CNC support’s (25%) bonus dedicated to the first seasons of series of 52 minutes’ length to be extended to shorter formats (from 20-52 minutes) – especially programmes targeted at young audiences.

“It’s vital that we help our series adhere to an industrial logic.” This is the second focus highlighted by the president of the CNC, the goal of which is to reduce the time gap between the first and second seasons of original French series. The tool will be an extension of the 25% bonus from the first to the second seasons of series lasting between 20 and 52 minutes, in order to encourage producers to release the second season of a series, even before the first is aired. The overall aim is to have one season produced per year so as to be in line with international standards.

Lastly, the CNC will lend a hand to French series with strong international potential by granting a bonus to works that benefit from substantial foreign pre-financing.

The second component of the Plan Séries, the details of which are currently being discussed with audiovisual professionals, will be devoted to writing, development and the use of visual effects.
